App passwords for groupware synchronisation (calendars, contacts etc.)

App passwords will replace the standard password used for synchronisation with the groupware (calendars, contacts etc.) on 1 December 2026. This change only affects you if you synchronise your calendars, address books, etc. from the groupware with an external device (e.g. a smartphone). If you work exclusively within the groupware, you do not need to do anything – there will be no changes to the groupware login process.

To protect the groupware from phishing and other attacks, only app passwords will be used for synchronisation with the groupware from 1 December 2026. You can already obtain app passwords from the groupware and enter them into your synchronisation programmes.

You can either switch to app passwords now or wait until 1 December 2026. If your synchronisation programme is then unable to log in to the groupware, replace your current user password with an app password.

At present, traditional user passwords and app passwords are being used in parallel.
