App passwords for the email system

App passwords will replace the standard password for the email system on 1 December 2026. This change only affects you if you use an email programme such as Thunderbird or Outlook to access your emails. If you use the groupware to access your emails, you do not need to do anything – there will be no changes to the groupware login.

To protect the email system from phishing and other attacks, only app passwords will be used for our email system from 1 December 2026. You can already obtain app passwords via account management and enter them into your email programmes. This requires you to save the password.

You can either switch to app passwords now or wait until 1 December 2026. If your email programme is then unable to log in to the email system, replace your current user password with an app password.

At present, traditional user passwords and app passwords are being used in parallel.
