Configuring the Matrix client

On this page you will learn how to configure the Matrix-Client for use with the University of Greifswald's home server.

Step 1 - Installing the Matrix client

Install the Matrix client that is suitable for your operating system and requirements. You can find an overview of the possible software clients on the website matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/.

These instructions describe the use of “element” as a Matrix client.

After successful installation, start the matrix client.

Declaration of consent

Before using the University of Greifswald's Matrix home server, you must give your declaration of consent in the central account management system (UMS).

Step 2 - First login and home server

When you start the application for the first time, a welcome screen appears. Proceed as follows:

  1.     click on “Log in”
  2.     in the “Home server” area, click on “Edit”
  3.     enter “matrix.uni-greifswald.de” as your home server
  4.     click on “Continue”
  5.     click on “Continue with Shibboleth” - a browser window will open for Shibboleth login
  6.     log in to the Shibboleth login with your central user account
  7.     a confirmation window appears with your matrix ID (@mxid-XXXXX:matrix.uni-greifswald.de )
  8.     click on “Continue” to release the login to the Matrix client
  9.     Done: the matrix client is now logged on to the home server “matrix.uni-greifswald.de” with your matrix ID
