Hybrid Classes

A hybrid class mixes traditional face-to-face teaching with digital transmission over the internet, allowing you to reach all of your students.

The class that you are teaching on-site at the University is broadcast simultaneously using web and video conference services and you can communicate with students that are both inside or outside of the classroom/lecture hall using various feedback channels.

Requirements

Holding hybrid classes successfully requires good-quality technical equipment. Important pieces of equipment include not only a suitable camera (webcam), but also a good-quality microphone. Having a second screen/monitor to keep an eye on the simultaneous conference is useful.

You need a modern, high-performance computer that is able to show your presentation to the persons physically attending your class , whilst at the same time broadcasting you together with your audio and camera signal over the internet. Of course you will also require a stable and fast internet connection.

If possible, in larger rooms it is better to relay sound over the central room microphones.

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Microphone
  • USB camera
  • Second screen/monitor

Connect all of the devices and signal sources with the computer that is going to broadcast the class over the internet and start the corresponding application on your computer (BigBlueButton, DFNconf/Pexip, Jitsi).

The Competence Centre for Video Conference Services (VCC) at TU Dresden has tested various devices and price categories:

The University provides high-end video systems in several lecture halls and seminar rooms (Logitech GROUP). These are equipped with wireless microphones (6 - 8.5 m radius) and can be used as standard USB webcam on computers. Thanks to the wide-angle optics and zoom function, teachers can use them easily to film themselves and their surroundings.
