Remote Access to University Services for the University Administration

This page provides you with information about services and tools you can use for remote access to the University.

Requirements

Remote access to the University data services requires a stable and fast internet connection (with at least 2 Mbit/s) with a computer or mobile device (smartphone or tablet).

All of the public services (WWW, email, web conferencing tools, ...) are subject to no further restrictions and can be used all over the world.

Depending on the circumstances, you might require VPN access for internal services(network drives, databases, ...), which provides access to the University’s local network.

General Services

Communication

Alongside more traditional telephone calls, you can also use chats and web conferences for communication purposes.

Chat - Instant Messaging

Instant messaging is a method of communication in which two or more participants chat with one another in real time.

The University runs its own central instant messaging service (Jabber/XMPP), which can be used by all members of the university community.

Web and Video Conference

The DFN’s web and video conferencing services can be used as an alternative to personal meetings. Up to 23 persons can take part in a conference or 200 in an eLearning class. The software allows users not only to share audio and video, but also screen contents.

Exchanging Files

Avoid sending files as email attachments within your working groups and use network drives / central storage locations or the file module in Groupware to edit and exchange files with one another.
